Interactive Wildlife Mural by Strange Harvest
Strange Harvest was commissioned to create a series of large-scale wildlife murals for the Giraffe House Wildlife Awareness Centre in Stellenbosch, South Africa. The project includes six murals positioned across the park, designed to enhance the visitor experience while celebrating African wildlife through vibrant colour, storytelling, and interactive design.
The first mural, located at the park’s entrance area, immediately captures the attention of visitors as they arrive. Created as an engaging interactive photo mural, the artwork transforms the entrance space into a lively visual landmark where families and tourists can pause, interact with the artwork, and capture memorable photos during their visit.
A Playful Wildlife Mural Celebrating Africa’s Iconic Giraffe
The mural features two expressive giraffe characters surrounded by bold tropical foliage and dynamic geometric colour forms. Painted in a vivid palette of greens, oranges, yellows, purples, and blues, the artwork reflects the energetic style that defines Strange Harvest’s contemporary mural work.
Each giraffe displays exaggerated, playful facial expressions that bring humour and personality to the wall. These character-driven elements create a light-hearted atmosphere that resonates with younger visitors while also celebrating one of Africa’s most recognisable wildlife species.
By combining character illustration with layered abstract backgrounds and lush botanical elements, the mural connects visually with the natural environment of the park while maintaining the striking visual impact of modern public art.
An Interactive Photo Mural for Visitors
One of the key goals of the mural was to create an interactive space for visitors. The central composition allows guests to stand between the giraffe characters and become part of the artwork, transforming the mural into a popular photo backdrop for families visiting the wildlife park.
This interactive approach encourages visitors to engage with the space, creating memorable moments while reinforcing the park’s message of wildlife appreciation and conservation.
Murals like this demonstrate how public art can transform everyday spaces into engaging visitor experiences, particularly in educational environments such as wildlife parks, schools, and cultural centres.
Supporting Wildlife Awareness Through Art
Alongside the character mural, a large typographic section highlights the park’s mission statement:
Our mission to make a difference one giraffe spot at a time.
The typography was hand-painted in a dynamic style designed to integrate seamlessly with the surrounding artwork. This element strengthens the educational message of the centre while adding another visual focal point within the mural composition.
By blending illustration, colour, and meaningful messaging, the mural helps communicate the importance of wildlife awareness and conservation in a creative and accessible way.
A Multi-Wall Mural Project Across the Park
The Giraffe House mural is the first installation in a six-wall mural project currently being developed across the wildlife park. Each mural will be designed to enhance different areas of the park while celebrating African wildlife through bold character design and vibrant storytelling.
Through projects like this, Strange Harvest continues to transform public spaces into immersive visual environments that inspire curiosity, creativity, and appreciation for nature.
Large-scale murals not only beautify spaces but also create meaningful connections between art, education, and community engagement.
Public Art That Creates Memorable Experiences
The Giraffe House project demonstrates how large-scale mural art can enrich visitor destinations, turning ordinary walls into memorable visual experiences. By combining interactive design with wildlife storytelling, Strange Harvest helps create spaces where art, education, and conservation meet.
